Hesychast monasteriesThese are the remarkable Ivanovski Skalni Manastiri (Ivans Rock Monasteries/Churches) along the Roussenski Lom River, near the town of Rousse; the Aladzha Monasery in the rocks nearby the Zlatni Pyasatsi Resort (Golden Sands) at the Black Sea coast. The Krustova Gora (Wood of the Cross) area in the Western Rhodopes as well as the site near the Rila Monastery where St. Ivan Rilksi had retreated in 9th century are sites of great interest, too. The Hesychasts are an Orthodox sect teaching marginal asceticism and misteriousness of the rituals and life in solitude. The followers of this doctrine lived in caves and close to nature.
