Alpinism

Our country offers very good mountaineering opportunities as well – the sport of the brave. The highest “grade” in this respect is given to Rila – the Malyovitsa sub-part being an Alpine Mecca to mountaineers. The highest rock walls are there with more than 400 metres variance in altitude. The climbing of Dyavolski Igli, Dvuglav, Zliyat Zab, Malyovitsa, Kamilata, Lovnitsa, Kuklata, Ushite and others is considered a professional certificate to every mountaineer. Pirin also offers sites of this type – the northern wall of Mt. Vihren, Stapalata, Momin Vrah, Sinanitsa, Atmegdan, Dzhengala, etc. Raiski Skali (Paradise Rocks) and the Northern Dzhendem (below Mt. Botev), Vratsata Massif, the gorge of the Iskar river do jistice to Stara Planina as an Alpine mountain. Should we complete the list with some other sites at lower altitude (the gorge of the Roussenski Lom River, the gorge of Erma River above the town of Tran, Karandila above Sliven, Maglizhki Skali (the rocks above the village of Maglizh), Cape Kaliakra at the Black Sea and others) the picture becomes rather varied and attractive. Mountaineering in Bulgaria can be practised throughout the year depending on the skills and training of the fans and the altitude of the site.
